Library Skills Course 6th Grade

Course Objective; Students will learn how to use the resources available in the library/media center. Students will learn research skills including skimming and scanning nonfiction text, note taking, evaluating websites, how to use databases, and how to avoid plagiarism by citing sources.
Material Covered:
1. Choosing a topic and developing an essential question
2. Questioning: what do you what to learn about your topic?
3. Locating books in the Destiny Catalog and finding them in our collection
4. Understanding how to use the resources of our library
5. How to approach non-fiction text to get information
6. Creating source note sheets for each source used
7. Note-taking
8. Evaluating online resources
9. collaborative creation of a website of information on endangered species
